Adapted Physical Education (Content Teaching Academy @ James Madison University)

This is a completed event.

Description:

The Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Science and Health Education and the Office of Special Education Instructional Services, in collaboration with James Madison University, are sponsoring this Adapted Physical Education institute (Grade Band(s): K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) at JMU’s summer 2017 Content Teaching Academy (CTA).

Participants of this academy will learn about the unique complexities of working with students with special needs and explore a variety of instructional strategies to ensure all students are successful, regardless of ability or disability. The Academy aims to empower physical educators to adapt skillfully and modify curriculum, instruction, tasks, equipment, and/or environment to address the individualized needs and abilities of each child so all students can successfully learn and participate. This high-quality staff development provides opportunities for sharing effective teaching and learning practices that improve the health and educational performance of all children.

The Virginia Department of Education will assume the cost of registration, graduate tuition (3 hrs.), DOUBLE lodging, and meals for all Virginia public school participants accepted into the program.

The 2017 Content Teaching Academy sessions begin at 8:30 am Monday, June 26 and conclude at noon on Friday, June 30. On Monday-Thursday, the daily schedule is set up much like a high school 4x4 block schedule, with two 1.5 hour sessions in the morning and two 1.5 hour sessions in the afternoon. Breaks with snacks and beverages are provided between sessions in both the mornings and afternoons. Participants who are enrolled in an Academy for graduate credit must attend two additional sessions scheduled from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Monday and Wednesday evenings.
