Transition services assist a toddler with a disability and his or her family to experience a smooth and effective transition from the early intervention program under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to early childhood special education services under Part B. If you have questions about transition requirements, want to increase your confidence in implementing those requirements, or want ideas for collaborating locally to build more effective local agreements for transition, please plan to participate in this 2-part series dedicated to transition. Both sessions are appropriate for local Part C staff, particularly service coordinators and local system managers, and Part B early childhood special education staff.

Presented on September 6, 2016: State staff from the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) and the Department of Education will jointly review transition requirements from both the Part C and Part B perspectives. They will highlight areas where there are overlapping responsibilities and identify policy, procedures, and timelines that are regulated as well as those that offer local determination.

Presented on October 4, 2016: Building on the information presented in Part I, staff from local early intervention systems and local school divisions will lead a web discussion about effective transition planning, communication, and collaboration at the local level. The Part C and Part B teams will discuss strategies for building and maintaining a good working relationship to ensure smooth and effective transitions.
