English Co-Teaching Academy: Addressing Non-Fiction and Writing in the Co-Taught Classroom (Virginia Department of Education, VDOE)

This is a completed event.

Description:

English Co-Teaching Pre-Registration Application

The Virginia Department of Education’s (VDOE’s) Office of Special Education Instructional Services, in collaboration with the Office of Humanities, will again sponsor the English Co-Teaching Academy: Addressing Non-Fiction and Writing in the Co-Taught Classroom. The Academy is designed for school teams of English and Special Education teachers working together to enhance all student outcomes, especially students with disabilities. The focus will be on improving content understanding, pedagogical strategies, collaboration/co-teaching strategies, and networking. Based on current performance data, extra emphasis will be placed on writing strategies for students with writing weaknesses.

Middle and high school English and Special Education teachers in co-teaching teams are the primary audience for this program. The VDOE is seeking two-member teams from individual middle and high schools. Priority will be given to teachers who teach in schools that have not met the state targets for English, especially for students with disabilities. Lodging will be provided on July 11 for those traveling more than 120 miles one way as measured from your assigned place of work. Lodging reservations will be made for participants if traveling more than 120 miles one way to the Academy site and you have indicated you need lodging during registration.

School divisions are encouraged to cover mileage expenses for participants who do not meet the threshold as described above as this cost is not assumed by the Department; however, this is not a requirement of the program. A $100/day stipend will be provided to each eligible participant.

Due to the high level of interest in this conference over the last four years, a pre-registration application is required. Please complete the English Co-Teaching Pre-Registration Application to express interest in attending. Once the application is reviewed and if selected to participate, participants will receive notification and the official registration link from Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech. Pre-registration applications must be submitted by May 31, 2019.
