Opening Doors- Unlocking Potential: Language, Literacy and the Home-School Connection

This is a completed event.

Description:

Opening Doors to Life Beyond High School (OD2LBHS) is designed to help students who are deaf and hard of hearing, from rising 8th graders to the new Class of 2018 grads, recognize their unique needs and develop self-determination skills to confidently assume responsibility for their educational and employment decisions as they move toward adulthood and successful post-secondary outcomes. This year, Opening Doors to Life Beyond High School (OD2LBHS) is being held during the first day of Opening Doors-Unlocking Potential, giving parents of OD2LBHS students the opportunity to hear Janet DesGeorges, Executive Director of Hands & Voices and keynote for ODUP 2018.

OD2LBHS Students will have fun learning with others in interactive sessions led by Deaf Self-Advocacy Trainers through Civic Access. The day will focus on “Self” ideas: Self-Advocacy, Self-Determination and Self-Esteem! These important ideas help students develop the mindset needed to believe they can achieve their goals!

OD2LBHS Parents will have the opportunity to attend sessions featuring important information on I’m Determined as well as Virginia agency resources important for transition age students and their families.

The day will include professional exhibits and the chance to meet with other Virginia parents of children and youth who are d/hh, providing everyone with useful connections, resources, and information.
