English Deeper Learning Institutes (Virginia Department of Education, VDOE)

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the K-12 English Language Arts Deeper Learning Conferences to be held in September-October 2019 at four sites throughout the Commonwealth. They are provided by the state to support and enhance the implementation of deeper learning as reflected in the 2017 Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework for English Language Arts.
K-12 Deeper Learning Conferences in English Language Arts will utilize a train-the-trainer model to provide professional development that focuses on continued implementation of engaging instruction that aligns to the 2017 Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework. Elementary sessions will include support for grades 3-5 literacy instruction, the development of grade 5 writing local assessments, and planning for instruction of K-3 students as presented by representatives from Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS). The PALS office will also be on-site to hold their annual division representatives meeting at each of the four locations. Secondary sessions will focus on pedagogical practices for middle school reading and writing, the development and scoring of local performance assessments to verify credits in writing, and integrating the 2017 English Standards of Learning for a more comprehensive approach to instruction. Additionally, roundtable discussions will provide opportunities for educators and specialists to discuss topics of interest with VDOE staff and presenters around matters such as English Language Learner instruction, early literacy, and the development of performance assessments.
