2017 Strategic Instruction Model (SIM™) (Content Teaching Academy @ James Madison University)

This is a completed event.

Description:

The Strategic Instruction Model (SIM™) Academy provides professional learning in the evidence-based practices, Learning Strategies and Content Enhancement Routines, developed by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning (KUCRL). The 2017 SIM Academy is unique in that it is built to respond to the requests of the educators in the schools/divisions that are implementing a multi-tiered system of supports (i.e., Content Literacy Continuum (CLC™) or Virginia Tiered System of Supports (VTSS).  By attending the SIM Academy. educators will earn the SIM Academy Micro-credential and a Level 1 Professional Learning Micro-credential for specific sessions. As a result, all educators attending are positioned in the system to demonstrate competency of implementation of an evidence- based practice with fidelity (Level 2), and as a next step, to earn a credential that would provide the individual with the expertise to provide professional development in a specific component of SIM to colleagues (Level 3). Both Levels 2 and 3 will be earned by working with a SIM professional developer during the upcoming school year.

Participation will include: previewing materials before the academy; viewing demonstrations of SIM; engaging in practice through active learning of the components of SIM; collaborating with educators within and outside of the school/division; and self-reflecting and self-assessing with feedback on learning over the course of the academy. All participants will be responsible for the development of a professional learning plan to support their implementation of SIM, which includes onsite coaching by a SIM professional developer for the academic year 2017-18.

This academy is provided by funding from USDOE, OSEP, State Personnel Development Grant #H323A120026, to the VDOE to support educators implementing the Virginia Tiered System of Supports (VTSS).
