Theme
The effect of the white tailed deer population on the native forest ecosystem
Scenario

The 2013 deer population in Virginia was estimated at about 920,000. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) has primary responsibility for managing white tailed deer in Virginia. It is their job to guide the management of: the deer habitat, the deer population, the damage caused by deer, and deer-related recreation in the Commonwealth.

The Caroline office of VDGIF holds a public hearing every month. They welcome members of the community to share their thoughts on actions that can be taken to enhance our county as a place in which both people and some wildlife can live. Some people mentioned the ever-fluctuating deer population being an issue, and want to know how we can maintain it without disrupting the native forest ecosystem.

Culminating Activity
Students will design and advocate a "deer-friendly" community that allows people and wildlife to live harmoniously.
