STEMABILITY (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) (Application Deadline: April 30, 2017)

Description:

There are many challenges that students encounter as they make the transition from high school to college. During the junior and senior high school years, students must decide to which colleges apply, based on their interests, academic achievements, personal skills, and finances. The transition to college is far more challenging for students with disabilities. These students need to consider the accommodations and services that they can receive from different colleges to more easily overcome their impairments. In order to facilitate the transition from high school to college and spark the students’ interest in science and engineering, Prof. Alex Leonessa and Raffaella De Vita organize every year a two-day long STEMABILITY summer camp for high school students with disabilities, who have expressed some interest in a career in science and engineering.

Cost for Two Day Program:

• $100 registration 
• Programming, lodging, meals, snacks, & materials for students are free
• No charge for parents (Lodging on their own)

We are seeking rising high school junior and senior students with disabilities who

1. expect to attend a 2 or 4 year college,
2. are seeking a Virginia Advanced Studies or Standard Diploma
3. have a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor,
4. are able to function independently in residential and dining activities and
5. want to explore science, engineering and technology related fields

We highly encourage parents to attend. Simultaneous sessions to help prepare for changing roles include: moving from IDEIA to ADA, assistive technologies, college accommodations, career possibilities and networking.
