The Faces and Facts of Disability (Social Security)

Description:

The Faces and Facts of Disability - Social Security is with you throughout life’s journey, touching the lives of nearly every American, often during times of personal hardship, transition, and uncertainty. Our programs serve as vital financial protection for working men and women, children, the disabled, and the elderly. For over 60 years, our disability program has remained true to its original purpose of delivering economic security against the risk of a severe disability that prevents substantial work.

We administer the largest disability program in the nation. Unfortunately, there are some common misconceptions. For example, some people don't understand that workers earn their disability benefit by working and paying Social Security taxes on their earnings.

We want to ensure that the American public understands this important program and has a clear picture of the individuals living with severe disabilities assisted by our program.

Many work tirelessly every day to provide service to individuals with disabilities. We thank you for making a difference in their lives. Those served by our disability program are our family members, friends, and neighbors — real people in our communities.
