VCU-ACE Remote Education for Young Learners Resources
Description:
VCU-ACE has developed a series of resources over the summer that are designed to support early childhood professionals as they plan remote learning opportunities for young learners. While we know that in-person instruction is optimal for young children, communities face a variety of COVID-19 related challenges in the coming year that may require the use of remote education. The following webcast resources may help early childhood professionals as they design and implement remote learning opportunities including the use of learning packets, school TV broadcasts, synchronous virtual sessions, and asynchronous activities.

This webcast was recorded during the first VCU-ACE Community of Leaders in Autism (CoLA) for Early Childhood virtual event held on June 26th, 2020. This webcast was presented to current and past participants in Project PASS, a VCU-ACE early childhood specific professional development program that has an emphasis on virtual training and remote e-coaching. In this webcast, Alicia Hart, Training Associate at VCU-ACE, and Stefanie Paul, Training and Technical Associate at VCU-ACE, describe the research on parent-mediated / parent-implemented interventions, coaching, and telehealth delivery models and how that can be applied to working with families raising young learners in a remote situation. The presenters also discuss their experience using virtual e-coaching with Project PASS and how to apply lessons learned to working with families remotely.
In this webcast, Alicia Hart, Training Associate at VCU-ACE and Stefanie Paul, Training and Technical Assistance Associate at VCU-ACE, discuss how to apply the framework of parent-mediated / parent-implemented interventions toward designing two different types of remote educational opportunities for young learners: teacher directed / parent supported remote learning (e.g. synchronous online video conference or school TV broadcasts) and teacher supported / parent led learning opportunities (e.g. asynchronous or learning packet-based activities implemented by the family). This presentation describes a process for addressing parent / caregiver expectations, supporting child engagement and attention throughout activities, supporting a child's communication needs, embedding learning throughout the day, and supporting parents as they lead activities at home using a wide variety of instructional strategies.
In this VCU-ACE Lunch and Learn presentation, Alicia Hart, Training Associate at VCU-ACE, provides families with an overview of parent-mediated / parent-implemented interventions, coaching, and telehealth delivery models, how these can be applied to virtual options for young learners, and describes a case study using her own family and her son with ASD.
