Social Emotional Learning Professional Development and Resources for Teachers of Students with Autism or Deafness/Hard of Hearing (Virginia Department of Education, VDOE)
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), Office of Special Education Instructional Services is offering a professional development series for teachers of students with Autism or Deafness/Hard of Hearing focusing on social emotional learning (SEL).
This three-part on demand series will teach special educators to use an evidenced-based social emotional learning tool called Kimochis. Kimochis follows the five core Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional (CASEL) competencies that support the VDOE’s SEL standards. Educators will learn how to help students with Autism or Deafness/Hard of Hearing learn to recognize and develop language about their emotions and experience more successful social and academic outcomes. Participating educators will be provided with materials and be equipped to bring these “must have” concepts and communication tools to build emotional resilience with students and support their emotional wellbeing.
Special educators serving students with Autism or Deafness/Hard of Hearing in Virginia’s special education programs may apply to participate in this free professional development series by watching a short introductory training and then completing the online application. Space is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis across Virginia school divisions.
