What is Data-Based Individualization? (NCII) DBI is a research-based process for individualizing and intensifying interventions through the systematic use of assessment data, validated interventions, and research-based adaptation strategies. DBI is a process, not a specific program or product. The process is driven by data, characterized by increased intensity and individualization, and considers the academic and behavioral needs of the student. In some schools, intensive intervention may be known as “Tier 3 intervention,” and may be embedded within a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework.

Intensive Intervention (Part 1): Using Data-Based Individualization To Intensify Instruction Module (IRIS Center) - This module, first in a series of two, overviews data-based individualization and provides information about adaptations for intensifying and individualizing instruction. Developed in collaboration with the National Center on Intensive Intervention at American Institutes for Research and the CEEDAR Center, this resource is designed for individuals who will be implementing intensive interventions (e.g., special education teachers, reading specialists, interventionists) (est. completion time: 3 hours).
Using the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity Within the Data-Based Individualization Process: A Behavior Example (NCII) introduces the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity and describes how it supports the DBI process by helping provide explicit guidance on how to select and evaluate validated behavior intervention programs to best meet students’ needs and intensify or adapt those interventions when students or groups of students do not adequately respond. This module is a companion to Using the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity to Select, Design, and Intensify Intervention with a specific focus on behavior.
