Description:

The Virginia Department of Education Office of Special Education Instructional Services in consultation with the Office of Mathematics and Governor’s Schools and in partnership with James Madison University Content Teaching Academy, is sponsoring Augmenting Mathematics and Special Educator Teams (AMSET) Academy.  The two day academy, June 27-28, 2016 is designed for mathematics and special educator school teams working together to enhance student outcomes, especially students with disabilities, by focusing on improving content understanding, pedagogical strategies, collaboration strategies, and networking within the co-taught classroom. Sessions will feature evidence-based interventions including, “Using Three Models to Establish Strong Fraction, Decimal, Percent and Integers Understanding,” hands-on demonstration and practice with manipulatives and pictorial representations, as well as effective co-teaching practices.

A requirement of the AMSET Academy is a teacher team (one Special Education Teacher and a co-teaching Mathematics Teacher attend).  **Important NOTE** When completing the registration form you must BOTH the other member of your teacher team. Please be aware that while you may get an email upon completion of the form saying your registration is COMPLETE your status will be changed to PENDING if the other member of your team does not register within 10 days.

Registration Fee: $180.00 / $180.00 (earlybird - by Fri, 05/20/2016)

The Department is seeking middle school, mathematics 6-8, and Algebra 1 teachers in co-teaching teams from individual middle and high schools.  Priority will be given to teachers who teach in schools that have not met their annual measurable objective (AMO) for students with disabilities in mathematics.  The Virginia Department of Education will assume the cost of Registration, the extra meal plan (breakfast and dinner) and DOUBLE lodging.  A $150 stipend will be provided to each participant upon successful completion of this 2-day academy.
