Real Co-Teachers of Virginia: Abnormal Times Require Extraordinary Teachers


VDOE Excellence in Co-Teaching Initiative


After two years of virtual and hybrid instruction, the 2021-2022 school year saw the Real Co-Teachers of Virginia back in the classroom full-time. As they began the year looking forward to a wonderful experience with the students they missed so much, they could not have anticipated what lie ahead. These abnormal times required extraordinary teachers.

The demonstration site teams of the Excellence in Co-Teaching Initiative documented their experiences during this year through reflective journaling. Selected quotes are shared from those journals to illustrate unique issues they experienced and how they resolved them. It is hoped that readers facing their own classroom challenges during any school year will find in these excerpts a wealth of ideas to meet those challenges, and will see the benefits of reflective journaling for their own personal and professional development.
