Description:

This series of webshops showcases products created by real co-teachers of Virginia, whose classrooms have been selected as demonstration sites for the Virginia Department of Education’s Excellence in Co-Teaching Initiative. The teams have received professional development in a number of instructional practices designed to engage students in the learning process. They have found these techniques critical to their students’ success.

In webshops 1 through 4, in videos and/or lesson plans, the teams demonstrate their use of Total Participation Techniques, Content Enhancement Routines, and High-Leverage Practices to enhance their students’ educational journey, in addition to using Specially Designed Instruction to close learning gaps. In webshop 5, some teams have shared professional development activities they presented to colleagues. Webshop 6 shares further information about:

Total Participation Techniques (TPTs) are motivational instructional techniques that give all students the confidence to participate in classroom activities and demonstrate their understanding of skills and concepts being taught.

Content Enhancement Routines (CERs) are research-based instructional routines that engage students in co-creating visual devices with their teachers which are designed to present and review content information in easy-to-understand formats. Embedded within each routine is a Cue-Do-Review instructional sequence.

High-Leverage Practices (HLPs) are instructional practices that all teachers should implement as they plan, deliver, and assess instruction. These have been found to promote academic and social/emotional growth for students, and are essential to the success of students with disabilities.

Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) is specialized “instruction” provided by special and general educators, designed to help students with disabilities master Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals/objectives and ensure access to and progress in the general curriculum. Teachers use specialized strategies to close the learning gaps between students’ current skills and general curriculum expectations.
