Virginia Leadership Institute (VaLI) for Strategic Instruction Model (SIM)™ Professional Developers in Content Enhancement or Learning Strategies (Applications should be postmarked and mailed by: February 28, 2019)


The Virginia Department of Education through the support of the Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports and in partnership with the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning (KU-CRL) will offer the Virginia Leadership Institute (VaLI) for SIM™ Professional Developers.  The intended outcomes of this institute is to increase the number of SIM Professional Developers in VA.  The five-day institute will be offered as a blended learning opportunity with three days face-to-face in June 2019 (dates & place TBD) and two additional days virtually during the school year (dates TBD).

Content Enhancement Routines  (CER) and Learning Strategies (LS) were developed as a part of the Strategic Instruction Model to enable educators to teach and support diverse learners. The VaLI will prepare educators who have implemented CER and/or LS to teach other educators how to implement with fidelity, as well as become literacy leaders within their school and division.

Eligible Applicants: (a) are experienced implementers of SIM, (b) have the interpersonal skills to become a professional developer, (c) have effective communication skills in teaching and working with adults, and (d) have administrative support for their participation in on-going professional growth.

The registration fee for the VaLI is $850 (U.S.) per person and is waived due to funding from the Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports. Additionally, a stipend of $500 will be paid to all participants after the successful completion of all requirements of the apprenticeship. Lodging, breakfast and lunch will be provided during the three days of face-to-face professional development. Transportation and other meals are the responsibility of the participant; however, typically many school divisions may reimburse for these costs.
