Pathways for Parents webinar: Keeping Kids Safe - What to Do if Your Autistic Child Runs or Wanders Away (May Institute), Oct. 24, 2024, 5:15pm-6:30pm

This is a completed event.

Description:

Elopement sometimes known as wandering, running away, or bolting can happen in the blink of an eye. One minute your child is right there and the next he is out the front gate, the front door, or across the grocery store. In a study in 2012, 65% of autistic children who elope were missing long enough to be a cause for concern, or had close calls with traffic injuries or were at risk for drowning. In this presentation, we will discuss 1) the most likely reasons that the behavior occurs, 2) some preventative measures to reduce the likelihood it will happen, and 3) interventions that have shown to be effective when it does happen.
