Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) Testing (VDOE)

Description:

Virginia schools are beginning mid-year reading screenings for students in kindergarten through third grade using the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS). Testing takes place January 5–30, 2026, with scores finalized by February 13. All students in grades K–2 are screened at mid-year. In grade 3, only students who were identified as high risk in the fall are required to be screened. These short screenings help teachers understand how students are progressing in key early reading skills and what support may be needed.
